Meet the crew

Kara J Brown - Owner/Lead Photographer

Nestled in Granite Quarry, North Carolina, I became immersed in the world of photography as a hobby transformed into n unbelievable career venture. Sunflower Studios has opened gracious doors in my life, ultimately granting me the privilege of creating lasting friendships, one of a kind memories and a reputable portfolio, all thanks to my amazing clients. There comes great gratitude when given the opportunity to capture the way a father’s eyes gleam at his little girl, now dressed in a wedding gown, or even the rush of emotion as a groom lays eyes on his soon to be wife. Rejoicing with high school and college seniors, celebrating the blessings of life with newborns and family sessions. I play no favorites, they all hold the utmost importance to my ultimate task, which is to provide individuals, couples and families with photographs worth far more than 1000 words. Aside from my easy going demeanor and spunky personality, I treat each session with professionalism and grace, with the intentions to satisfy even your largest expectations.  I can't wait to work with you on this amazing journey."      - Kara

Photographer Q+A  -  Kara

Where is your favorite place to edit photos?  I honestly love reclining in my sofa while editing.  I usually turn the lights off, light a couple candles, and edit away!

What is your dream location for a photo shoot?  An exotic beach- ideally, Hawaii, the Bahamas, or Mexico! ANDDD…the Biltmore!!

What is the number one thing you want your clients to know upfront about you?  I am outgoing and I love to have fun.  Come prepared to laugh and love!

Why did you take interest in photography?  It’s always been something I have enjoyed. At age 14, I started taking photos of my friends for fun.  Photography then expanded beyond just a hobby.  I LOVE doing something that I am so passionate about.  I don't consider photography to be work because it is truly something I enjoy adding to my schedule.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since starting sunflower studios?  I have learned to not get caught up in the big things and just enjoy the little things.  I’ve learned instead of battling against my competitors I should learn from them and congratulate them on their outcomes.

To what do you owe your photography success?  Staying positive, accepting feedback, and studying!  I have learned to soak up all the advice and info I can get my hands on and to apply that every time I sit down to edit, every time I press the shutter, and every time I pose a couple.  I try to have a vision before I show up to your session!

What sets you apart from other photographers?  I have what I call the “bridal” look or the “spring” look.  I love pastels, I love light + airy, and I love bright!  I strive to make your session so much fun but yet also deliver the best possible photos you could ask for!

Describe your style of photography in 3 words?   Charming, light, + airy.

What is your purpose in doing bridal/wedding consultants prior to booking a day?  I can only create you a custom package if I know what you need.  Every bride has different wants and needs on her wedding day.  There’s so much to choose from, from your hours, to 1-4 photographers, to engagements, to bridals.  We also discuss any special request you have for that day from me.  I like to get to know my brides not only as a client, but also as a friend.

How do you encourage your clients to be comfortable in front of the camera lens?  I encourage them to just be themselves.  I will of course pose you, but I want you to also be yourself and be comfortable in your own skin.  The purpose of photos is to capture YOU and your lifestyle.  I want you to be relaxed and have a great overall experience.

If a bride was anxious about taking bridal portraits because she is super casual and never dressed up, where would you suggest she take her photos?  I would suggest a park or somewhere that is memorable to her- somewhere that naturally compliments her personal style. Rather that be enjoying the outdoors at a park, or a private location such as a farm.  Bridal’s are something you and your groom can cherish forever.

Do you remember your first shoot? How have you grown since then?   My first session was my brother’s engagement sessions! I was 16 and my brother was recently engaged.  His fiancé had seen some of the work that me and my friends had done just messing around and had faith in me!  I was so honored and thrilled to be apart of engagement in that way.  I knew from that day on that that was my passion and what I had to do for my life.  Since them I have grown in every way possible, I have grown confidence, knowledge, ways of editing, and style!

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?  Hmmmm…so much to choose from.  My top to goals/visions in the next 5 years would have to be these two:  I hope to have two teams so we can serve more brides. I also hope to have 25% of my sessions destination or travel-based.

Do you provide studio settings if client should inquire?  I do!  I prefer natural light and the outdoors but if I have a special request, if I am available, I do fulfil those needs. I have a boudoir studio at my home that is set up for future brides.  I also have studio lights, backdrops, props for newborns and children, etc.

Marilena Villardi - Second Photographer

Marilena is my bestfriend, co-worker, and best side-kick I could ask for!  She is an amazing mother to two(Andrew + Alivia) and an incredible wife.  This girl is AMAZING with posing! She is there to make sure every hair is in place, every shot is perfected, and no shot missed.  She is a true, kindhearted soul that makes your wedding day just that much smoother.
